A possible appointment as loans manager had been on the cards in the shape of former Charlton Athletic boss Michael Appleton.

Appleton ‘won’t be’ taking the job and is now looking at opportunities to return to management.

A former Manchester United midfielder, the 49-year-old has a wealth of managerial experience and could have been seen as a good appointment as loans boss.

He has had stints in charge of West Brom, Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Oxford United, Leicester City, Lincoln City and most recently, Charlton.

Appleton lasted just around six months at the Valley, taking charge of 28 games for the Addicks.
