Kevin De Bruyne once again showed how important he is to Manchester City tonight during their 1-nil win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. He scored the winner in City’s crucial win tonight at the Etihad. It is well known that De Bruyne will leave Manchester City at the end of this season. But there was a thought that did spring up after tonight’s match: Have City let De Bruyne leave the club as they have something or someone big lined up to replace him?
Manchester City’s decision to let De Bruyne leave at the end of this season is a ruthless one. De Bruyne is arguably City’s greatest ever player and he has given his all for the cause. But, having said that, City do have to get ruthless this summer as they rebuild Pep Guardiola’s squad. De Bruyne’s impending departure does highlight that City need to add creativity in midfield. It is one area they must address this summer, irrespective of whether De Bruyne stayed or left the club. One player has always loomed as City’s dream signing to help fill the void left by De Bruyne’s departure. That is Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.
A report emerged late in March from Subhankar Mondal for TeamTalk that Florian Wirtz is keen to move to Manchester City and play under Pep Guardiola. It remains to be seen if that report is on the money. That answer will be known this summer. Kevin De Bruyne announced his departure from Manchester City at the beginning of April, a week after that report emerged. So perhaps City do have a big-name replacement lined up for a club legend. Maybe that clue has always been there amongst the emotion of De Bruyne’s final games as a City player. Time will tell the answer to that.
De Bruyne again put in a crucial performance for his team tonight. He ran himself into the ground and scored the winner in a massive win for Pep Guardiola’s side. But following the game the thought that City must have someone lined up to fill that void was inescapable. Perhaps it is Florian Wirtz who Manchester City have lined up to add creativity to their midfield. That answer will be known this summer but it’s hard to see City not being prepared for the departure of a club legend.
