Olympique de Marseille are in a terrible run of form coming into the end of the season. Les Phocéens have lost five of their last seven, which has left their grip on a podium position under threat with only five matches remaining in the Ligue 1 season.
With the club searching for solutions, Roberto De Zerbi’s tactics and management have come under criticism from the former Marseille player Christophe Dugarry. At the microphone of Rothen s’enflamme, the now-retired striker took issue with De Zerbi’s team selection in the 3-0 defeat to AS Monaco on Saturday.
“The coach has never found the right combination,” Dugarry said. “No player plays in the right place and none are in their favourite position.” In defence, De Zerbi lined up with a back three that consisted of no recognised centre-backs, while up front, nominal winger Jonathan Rowe was given a chance as the number nine.
Dugarry continued, “I saw [De Zerbi] at the end with his head in his hands. You see that he has no solutions. He has none!” However, the former Marseille man stopped short at calling for De Zerbi to be let go, “I’m not saying to you that we have to get rid of him, and I think we have to keep him for sustainability, but it’s a disaster. And what’s more, I think he won’t stay.”
Marseille’s future remains within their hands heading into the final stretch of the season. On Saturday the club will host bottom of the table Montpellier HSC.
