Martin Zubimendi’s potential move to Arsenal this summer is ‘still on’ despite rival interest in the Real Sociedad midfielder.
Arsenal are understood to have reached an agreement to sign Zubimendi at the end of the campaign. The Gunners have informed Sociedad of their willingness to meet the player’s €60m (£50.1m) release clause with the Spaniard open to the switch to North London.
However, fears have emerged that the deal could be hijacked. Real Madrid are said to hold a strong interest in the 26-year-old with uncertainty over Luka Modric’s future at the Bernabeu beyond this season. Modric will turn 40 in September and Zubimendi is viewed as an ideal long-term replacement for the Croatian.
Liverpool also failed with a move to sign Zubimendi last summer. The Reds were willing to activate the midfielder’s release clause, but Zubimendi turned down the transfer in favour of staying in San Sebastien.
Sociedad, however, have endured a tough campaign and sit 10th in the La Liga table. Liverpool remain keen to bring in a midfielder and could renew their interest should Zubimendi indicate he’s open to Anfield.
However, Marca Radio have claimed that Zubimendi is still “on his way to Arsenal” despite the rival interest. He could link up with former Sociedad teammates Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard in North London.
Zubimendi has made 226 appearances for Real Sociedad since progressing from the club’s youth system and formed part of the Spain team that won Euro 2024 last summer. This season, he ranks among La Liga’s leading players for progressive passes (6th), tackles (9th) and successful take-on percentage (4th – 69.2%).
