Tottenham couldn't quite find the go-ahead goal on Thursday night in the Europa League, as they drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt to set themselves up for a difficult second leg on the road in Germany.
In the meantime, an under fire Ange Postecoglou will head back to the Premier League on Sunday with a road trip to Wolves, who, despite being one of the worst teams in the table, have enough talent to give Spurs a fright.
Here are five players who will decide Tottenham vs. Wolves this weekend.
Pedro Porro scored a brilliant goal against Eintracht Frankfurt at mid-week as part of a solid all-around display at right back, and his presence will be needed against Wolves this weekend. One of the best in the world in his position, Porro will have the most enticing one-on-one matchup of the night against Wolves wing back Rayan Ait-Nouri, who is, apparently, a Tottenham transfer target this summer.
With 5 assists and more than 3 combined tackles and interceptions per game this season, Porro is one of the most well-rounded fullbacks in the Premier League with his creativity and defensive ability. Tottenham will need both of those characteristics to be on point this Sunday if they want to secure the full three points on the road.
Rayan Ait-Nouri has become popular enough that he is slowly shedding the underrated tag, as he is legitimately one of the best left backs in the Premier League. In a wing back role, Ait-Nouri would be able to do more damage offensively to a Tottenham team that can be vulnerable on the counter, especially whenever fullbacks Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro push up high.
This season, Ait-Nouri has eight goal contributions and 2.6 combined dribbles completed and fouls drawn per game with 3.3 combined tackles and interceptions per match. He's been nearly as good of a player as Porro this season, and he could be the best player on the pitch for Wolves this weekend.
Whether he starts or comes off the bench, Richarlison will be important to Tottenham in this one, and it's past time the Brazilian international stepped up to the plate. Injuries and age have forced Richarlison into a rapid decline phase, and after he wasn't sold to Saudi Arabia, the former Everton star has done little to show Tottenham supporters that he can turn back the clock to his glory days.
Tottenham vs. Wolves could come down to the wire, and, if it does, Tottenham will need some hero ball from Richarlison off the bench. He has just two goals and one assist this season, barely registering in his involvement in one-on-ones or creatively. Tottenham need him to at least show up as a finisher, because they need the goals in key situations.
A smart signing from Reims this winter, Emmanuel Agbadou was quietly one of the best center backs in the French top flight and is legitimately one of the most underrated central defenders in all of world football.
Tottenham fans will undoubtedly become familiar with Agbadou by the end of the 90 minutes at the Molineux, as Agbadou is the kind of hard-nosed center back who can mark any of Spurs strikers out of the game entirely on Sunday. And Tottenham will have to do their best to avoid that, because Wolves will be hedging their bets on a frustratingly defensive approach. Agbadou is the definition of no-nonsense in defense.
Archie Gray has started at center back and could do the same for Tottenham this weekend against Wolves, but it is far more likely that the talented young player gets a familiar start in midfield as a No. 8, where he will have perhaps the most important role in the team as an all-around ball-winning and progressive option.
To be honest, Tottenham have struggled to turn midfield possession into real progression and creativity. James Maddison is great at the creativity, and Spurs have some good progressors on paper, but, in reality, Spurs have not been getting enough control and quality chance-creation going.
Gray and Lucas Bergvall are two highly talented young midfielders who can do both, and, Gray, in particular, has an intriguing skill-set that lends itself to world-class development. Tottenham need to take their time with Gray, obviously, but games against a lower-level side like Wolves are an ideal opportunity for the 19-year-old to shine and show what he can do. And late in the season, it isn't unreasonable for Spurs to push him to step up just a little bit more.
