Mo Salah Proves Alan Shearer Wrong with Record-Breaking Season

Mohamed Salah’s 2024/25 campaign has defied expectations, with the Egyptian forward delivering performances that challenge the narrative around footballers in their 30s. The Liverpool star, once again, finds himself rewriting the record books while keeping his side firmly in the Premier League title conversation. Salah’s relentless brilliance has even prompted former England captain Alan Shearer to admit he misjudged the player’s trajectory this season.

Salah Shines Amid Contract Uncertainty

Despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future at Anfield, Salah has remained a beacon of consistency. His current deal expires at the end of the season, yet that hasn’t deterred the 32-year-old from producing some of the best football of his career. Against Everton in the recent Merseyside derby, Salah delivered a performance that underlined his enduring influence.

His pinpoint cross for Alexis Mac Allister’s equaliser marked his ninth away assist in just 13 Premier League matches this season. Coupled with his 13 goals on the road, Salah’s total of 22 goal involvements away from home eclipsed Andy Cole’s long-standing record of 21, set back in the 1993/94 season. By full-time, Salah had stretched that new benchmark to 23 with a goal of his own.

Shearer Admits Salah Proved Him Wrong

Salah’s relentless productivity this season has silenced even the most seasoned pundits. Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer, had expressed doubts earlier in the season about Salah’s ability to maintain his level amid contract talks. On a recent episode of The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer conceded he got it wrong.

“I said earlier in the season, didn’t I, that there would be a tiny drop-off because of his contract situation, the worry that you haven’t got the protection or the guarantee of that behind you going forward,” Shearer admitted.

“At the minute, there hasn’t been at all. I thought it would have only been human nature to see a tiny, tiny drop-off but there isn’t. That tells about his mindset and how tough he is mentally.”

A Legacy Still Being Written

With 27 goals and 19 assists across all competitions this season, Salah has once again placed himself among the game’s elite. Former Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia recently touted Salah as a genuine Ballon d’Or contender, and if his form persists, few would argue against that claim.

As Liverpool continue to negotiate a potential contract extension, one thing is clear: Mohamed Salah’s hunger for goals, assists, and records remains undiminished. And while Alan Shearer may have doubted the Egyptian’s staying power, Salah’s performances have delivered a resounding response.
