Ruben Amorim has insisted Manchester United must be ‘careful with transfers’ to avoid previous ‘mistakes’.
Amorim’s first transfer window in charge ended with just one first-team arrival, as left-back Patrick Dorgu arrived from Lecce. United also agreed a deal to sign 18-year-old central defender Ayden Heaven from Arsenal, with the duo presented ahead of Sunday’s game with Crystal Palace.
Speaking ahead of the club’s FA Cup fourth-round tie with Leicester City on Friday, Amorim said the duo are available for selection.
“We’ll see, you guys have to wait until tomorrow but they are ready to play and are two more solutions in this moment,” he said at his pre-match press conference.
Discussing the January window, Amorim said it is important Manchester United take a patient approach to recruitment. He pointed to past mistakes in the market as reason for a more ‘careful’ approach to signings.
“What I feel is that the club is taking its time,” he said.
“We know the urgency of the moment of the team, everybody here doesn’t want to make the same mistakes of the past, in the summer we will see but like I said we are being really careful with transfers because we did some mistakes in the past.”
One player who did depart in the window was Marcus Rashford, who joined Aston Villa on loan. The forward had not featured since being dropped for December’s Manchester Derby and Amorim was reluctant to discuss Rashford’s future.
“Guys, in the summer. Like we said before, we are fighting for our jobs until the summer. So I am just focused on these games.
“Thankfully about Marcus, he is in Birmingham now with Unai, so you can take these questions to another coach. we are just focused on our players.”
