Alan Shearer has selected the Premier League’s official Team of the Week for Matchweek 29, and the former Newcastle United striker picked Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber in his side.

Shearer wrote that Timber “played his part in the clean sheet, but also got forward from right-back to cause Chelsea problems with his crosses”.

Timber put in a strong defensive performance against Chelsea, making three clearances, two interceptions, and one tackle, winning nine of his 14 duels including four of five in the air.

The right-back only committed one foul, but he won three free-kicks for Arsenal, and he completed 88% of his passes on the day.

Timber has held down Arsenal’s right-back spot consistently over the last few months, despite only returning from an ACL injury in May. The Gunners have had a number of injuries at the back this season, and Timber has had to fill in much more often than the medical staff might have planned.

Ben White’s recent return only seems to have spurred the Dutch defender on, with a goal in the Champions League last-16 tie against PSV, an assist against Manchester United, and now a Team of the Week inclusion for his display against Chelsea.

Timber has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers this season, surpassing all expectations for his return from a long-term lay-off.

The defender will now link up with the Netherlands for their Nations League quarter-final tie against Spain over the March break.
