The Gunners come crashing back down to earth
Arsenal were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage after losing to Newcastle.
Newcastle went into this second leg 2-0 up on aggregate after beating Arsenal at Emirates Stadium last month.
Eddie Howe’s side were 2-0 winners again at St. James’ Park, with goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon booking them a spot in next month’s final.
Arsenal now have over a week until their next game and head off to Dubai on Thursday morning for a warm-weather training camp.
Simon Collings was at St. James’ Park to see Arsenal in action...
David Raya 4
Sold Declan Rice short with a pass on the edge of the box for Newcastle’s second goal. Uncharacteristically shaky playing out from the back.
Jurrien Timber 5
Had a tough evening up against Gordon, who was a threat with his pace. Overloaded at times because Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall got forward, too.
William Saliba 4
Given the run around by Alexander Isak, who was excellent. So rare to see the Frenchman struggle like this.
Gabriel 5
Like Saliba, the Brazilian had one of his worst games in a while. Undone by Isak’s movement and pace on the counter.
Myles Lewis-Skelly 6
A steady performance from the left-back, who was one of Arsenal’s better defenders. Newcastle’s threat came from the other flank.
Martin Odegaard 5
Hit the post with a great chance when the game was tied at 0-0. Proved costly, as Newcastle took the lead moments later.
Thomas Partey 6
One of Arsenal’s better players, but that is not something to shout about. Brought some control at the base of midfield.
Declan Rice 6
Caught out on the edge of the box for Newcastle’s second goal, but the pass from Raya was poor. Tried to give Arsenal some drive in midfield.
Gabriel Martinelli 5
Could not make it to half-time after picking up a hamstring injury. A concern for Arsenal give they’re already so short on forward options.
Kai Havertz 5
Had a tough old game up against Newcastle’s three centre-backs. Got very little change out of them and was booked.
Leandro Trossard 5
Did not get much joy down his flank and was taken off with around 30 minutes to go. The game was dead by then.
Substitutions
Ethan Nwaneri (Martinelli 37’) 6
A rare bright spark. Tried to make things happen and went at his opposite man a lot.
Mikel Merino (Odegaard 61’) 5
Typical steady and tidy on the ball, but the game was gone by the time he came on.
Raheem Sterling (Trossard 61’) 5
Behind Nwaneri in the pecking order now. Given a stint out left, here, and was booked.
Riccardo Calafiori (Timber 77’) N/A
Jorginho (Partey 78’) N/A
Subs not used: Setford, Kiwior, Tierney, Zinchenko
