Arsenal are reportedly working on a deal to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window.
The Spain international rejected a move to Liverpool last year to stay in San Sebastian, while Manchester City and Real Madrid were also linked with the player.
The Gunners have been “pursuing” a move for the 25-year-old for a “considerable” time, according to The Athletic, who claim that Mikel Arteta is the main driver behind the signing.
Their pursuit of Zubimendi was “reinvigorated” during the summer when Arsenal completed the transfer of former Sociedad teammate Mikel Merino for £28.4 million.
The defensive midfielder, who was part of the Spain squad that won Euro 2024, explained why he chose to stay put in the summer rather than join Liverpool.
“Until now I have thought that the best thing was to be at my club,” Zubimendi said in October.
“I am looking for my personal growth and I still have a lot to give to Real. There are always rumours but so far I’ve always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad.
“I’ve still a lot of things to give to this club, I still wanna grow and develop here.”
Arteta said on Tuesday that Arsenal are looking to make signings in January amid an ongoing injury crisis.
“We have to believe that something will make us better. Not just in that position (centre forward), as we have other issues,” he told his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Spurs.
“A player can bring a lot to a team in different ways. We are going to hope and believe and that is what we are trying to do.”
