Arsenal have raised Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres in discussions over a badly-needed forward signing for January, according to the Independent.

The Gunners have been forced to shelve their plans of waiting until the summer before signing a striker after the ACL injury Gabriel Jesus sustained, and the Sweden international is now a potential target.

Arsenal also have RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and his Brighton & Hove Albion counterpart Evan Ferguson on their radar as they look to bolster their attacking ranks during the ongoing January transfer window.

Gyokeres has 32 goals in 30 appearances so far this term and the North Londoners could do with such a striker leading their attack going forward.

However, Arsenal may need to part with his €100 million release clause to have any chance of landing him this month, with the likes of Manchester United plotting a summer swoop.

The Red Devils are hopeful of holding off competition for Gyokeres in order to secure a deal in the summer, and the Gunners have to make a move in the winter if they want him.

The presence of Ruben Amorim at the Old Trafford club could boost the club as they chase the Sporting striker, with a reunion likely to appeal to him, but nothing is guaranteed and Arsenal can get a deal done if their project is enough to convince the hitman.

They need a quality number 9 if they are to become regular Premier League title winners despite the current options manager Mikel Arteta has, and landing the Swede will do their fortunes in the attacking third plenty of good.

They remain very much in the title race this term, with just four points separating them from leaders Liverpool (who have a game in hand), and bringing in a top finisher could turn the tides in their favour.
