Arsenal forward Alessia Russo has been named as the Women’s FWA Footballer of the Year for the 2024/24 campaign.

Russo has scored 20 goals in all competitions for the Gunners and is the joint-leading scorer in the WSL this season. She’s netted seven times during Arsenal’s run to the Champions League final, where the North Londoners will take on Barcelona on May 24th. It’s only Arsenal’s second final and first since becoming England’s only European champions in 2007.

The 26-year-old is the second Arsenal player to win the Women’s Footballer of the Year award, since its introduction in 2017/18. She beat competition from last year’s winner, Manchester City striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw to win the prize. Arsenal teammate Mariona Caldentey and Chelsea’s Millie Bright rounded out the top four.

On Russo’s win,  FWA chair John Cross said: “Alessia’s performances, especially in the Champions League have been the stand-out from the season. She seems to have taken a huge leap since joining Arsenal and her overall game as well as her goals make her a special player.

“We’re delighted to be crowning her Women’s Footballer of the Year but hope that it’s not the last honour she receives this season with the Champions League Final at the end of the month.”

Mohamed Salah won the men’s equivalent, after his role in Liverpool’s Premier League title success. The Egyptian leads the Premier League for goals and assists this season. Salah’s award is his third FWA accolade, equalling the record of former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.
