It has been a difficult year for Andreas Christensen as he has missed almost the entire season through injury problems.

After featuring in the opening game of the campaign against Valencia, the 29-year-old was out until late January due to an Achilles tendon issue that required surgery.

Just as he was close to returning, a calf injury sidelined him for an additional month. Days after receiving a clearance, suffered a relapse in early March, getting benched for four more weeks.

Having finally returned to the squad in April, Christensen made his comeback on the field against Inter Milan in the first leg of the UCL semi-final.

Since his comeback, Christensen has built some form and momentum, most recently impressing in the 2-0 derby win over Espanyol that clinched the La Liga title for Barcelona.

New contract coming for Christensen?

As such, SPORT now reports that Barcelona are considering extending Andreas Christensen’s contract by one additional year.

His current deal runs until 2026, and speculations were rife that the Danish international could be sold to make room for new arrivals.

However, as per the report, while there are concerns about his physical condition, manager Hansi Flick believes the former Chelsea ace can be an important player when fully fit.

As such, Barcelona are now considering offering him a short-term extension for one more year, as it would not only give them a chance to look at how he fares when fully fit but also strengthen their negotiating position in case of a transfer.

Christensen, for his part, is also determined to stay put at Barcelona and is keen on using the remaining matches of the season to convince Flick & co. to keep him at the club.

The Danish international has been top-notch in the handful of appearances he has made since returning from injury, showing great understanding and adaptation to Flick’s tactical philosophy.

As such, it would not be the worst idea for Barça to take a gamble on Christensen’s fitness and offer him a short-term extension.
