Barcelona have been looking for ways to create salary space so that they can rope in out-of-favour Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford before the winter window closes.

The initial idea was to part ways with Ansu Fati, but the La Masia ace is reluctant to leave despite not being a part of Hansi Flick’s plans.

Eric Garcia’s departure was then considered but has since been ruled out despite the player attracting significant interest.

Andreas Christensen could be the solution

Now, though, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona could find a solution in the form of defender Andreas Christensen.

Indeed, the 28-year-old could emerge as the key to resolving Barcelona’s financial fair play issues and enable the club to strengthen its squad, potentially by signing Rashford during this winter transfer window.

The Danish defender has barely played this season for Barça, as he was sidelined for five months due to an injury. He received medical clearance earlier this month but is yet to add to his solitary appearance this season which came on the opening day vs. Valencia.

Currently, Christensen’s chances of playing appear slim. Ronald Araujo has stepped in to replace the injured Inigo Martínez and formed a defensive partnership with Pau Cubarsi.

Meanwhile, the midfield position is secured by the duo of Marc Casad and Pedri, Additionally, Frenkie de Jong has emerged as an alternative, while Eric Garcia also remains an option for manager Hansi Flick in both defence and the midfield positions.

As such, Christensen’s opportunities are limited. Given this situation, the 28-year-old is contemplating leaving Barcelona in search of more playing time.

With a contract running until June 2026, and after joining the club on a free transfer, the Blaugrana could make a profitable deal for the defender, whose reputation in the Premier League remains strong following his time at Chelsea.
