FC Barcelona secured a convincing 4-0 victory over UD Barbastro in the Copa del Rey Round of 32 last night, a fixture that showcased a calm and composed performance from the Catalans—something not always guaranteed in recent seasons.
Among the standout players in the encounter was Pablo Torre, who delivered a masterful performance after being handed a rare start this season. The 21-year-old midfielder, deployed on the right flank—a position not traditionally his forte—was nothing short of unstoppable, leaving a significant mark on the game.
Now, as per Mundo Deportivo, Torre has earned the nickname, the ‘Beckham of Santander’ for his exploits so far this season, with players like Hector Fort comparing him to the legendary English midfielder for the way he plays.
Against Barbastro, Torre scored a goal and provided two assists, one of which was almost Dennis Bergkamp-esque. His other assist came from a dead ball situation which is seemingly something he excels in.
Torre is in his third season as a Barcelona player, although he spent last season out on loan at Girona. He has grown leaps and bounds from the player that he was when he first came to the club and looks to be a very promising player to have in the squad.
The 21-year-old took responsibility for corners and free-kicks and the report has mentioned that he has been assigned to set-pieces ever since before his move to Barcelona. Although he is still far away from the level that Beckham was at, one would argue that Torre has the potential to become a top player.
With Dani Olmo’s registration far from certain at the club, one would assume that Hansi Flick will start giving Pablo Torre more chances in the coming weeks. The next half-season could become career-defining for the man from Santander and let’s wait and see how he goes about it.
