Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen is on the verge of making his long-awaited return from injury.

According to recent reports from SPORT, the Danish centre-back is closer than ever to being fully fit, and he could receive medical clearance in the coming days.

While his return might not come in time for Barcelona’s match against Rayo Vallecano, there is growing optimism that he will be available for the upcoming fixture against UD Las Palmas on 22 February.

For Hansi Flick, Christensen’s return will feel like a fresh signing in the middle of the season. The German coach has had limited opportunities to rely on the defender since taking charge, and his presence will provide much-needed depth.

When fully fit, Christensen has proven to be a reliable option, but injuries have significantly disrupted his season.

What happened to Christensen

The setbacks began early in the campaign. Flick initially gave Christensen around 30 minutes in the match against Valencia, which was the coach’s first official game in charge.

However, the Danish defender soon found himself sidelined due to persistent Achilles tendon issues.

Flick made it clear that he only wanted players available if they were at full fitness, leading to a prolonged recovery period. As a result, Christensen spent over four months out of action.

Just as he was nearing a comeback, more misfortune struck. Despite being on the bench for three consecutive matches—against Getafe, Benfica, and Valencia—he suffered another injury in late January during training.

Determined to come back

Now, Christensen is determined to put his injury struggles behind him. In recent days, he has pushed himself harder in training, gradually increasing his workload to ensure he returns in top shape.

However, with his recurring fitness problems, Barcelona will remain cautious. Flick will only bring him back into the squad once he is fully convinced of his readiness.

As the season enters a crucial phase, Christensen’s return could prove invaluable. Barcelona remain in the La Liga title race, have a strong position in the Champions League, and are just three games away from a potential Copa del Rey triumph.

Having a fully fit Christensen available for these decisive fixtures will undoubtedly boost the squad’s strength and flexibility.
