Barcelona’s upcoming summer transfer window is shaping up to be one of sheer significance, particularly in defence.

According to a report from CuleMania, the club is planning a potential revolution at the back — a move driven both by sporting needs and financial necessity.

Sporting Director Deco has three key signings in mind, with two of them aimed at strengthening the defence: a new right-back and a centre-back.

Jonathan Tah on radar

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah is said to be the leading target to bolster the heart of the defence.

With his contract nearing its end, the German international could arrive on a free transfer, making him an ideal low-cost addition for a club still battling to return to the strict La Liga 1:1 financial rule.

What is more striking is the growing expectation that Ronald Araujo could be sold. Despite being one of the most reliable defenders in recent years, the Uruguayan no longer feels completely at ease under new manager Hansi Flick.

Lingering doubts about Araujo’s continuity

While Flick values Araujo’s speed and physicality, there are concerns about his ability to contribute effectively in a system that relies heavily on ball movement — a key requirement under the German coach’s tactical approach.

Furthermore, Barcelona are also considering the sale of Andreas Christensen, who has struggled with both form and fitness this season. The Danish defender has lost prominence and, as a result, could be offloaded without much debate.

Together, Barcelona are hoping that the sale of Araujo and Christensen could bring in around €80 million, a figure that would be hugely helpful for Barcelona’s financial recovery and reinvestment strategy.

The funds could then be crucial in signing a versatile forward — someone capable of playing on the left wing and adding much-needed goals to the attack.

Could be a win-win situation

Although Christensen’s departure would be straightforward, letting go of Araujo won’t be as easy. The Uruguayan remains a fan favourite and a leader in the dressing room.

However, his rising market value and growing interest from Europe’s elite make him an attractive option to sacrifice if Barcelona are to fund major reinforcements elsewhere.

In the event of Araujo’s sale, Tah could step in seamlessly. With his experience, physical presence, and improved technical ability, he might be a solid fit for Flick’s high-line, possession-oriented setup.
