Hansi Flick had to start his career at FC Barcelona in very difficult circumstances, as in addition to the lack of a lot of reinforcements in the summer, he also had to contend with injuries to some of the most important players in his team in the early part of the season.
Frenkie de Jong was one such player who started the season while still on the sidelines, as he had suffered an ankle injury at the end of the last season, which kept him out for several months.
The Dutchman returned to action at the start of October but was able to perform at his best level only after the turn of the year, as he had to play with a lot of care because of fears of a relapse.
However, as things stand, Barcelona are quite satisfied with the Dutch midfielder’s performances, and his improved performances have also led to a greater willingness on the club’s part to negotiate a new contract for him with his agent, Ali Dursun.
But according to Mundo Deportivo, these negotiations will not take place right away. The Catalans are clear that a final decision regarding a new contract offer for Frenkie will be made by Hansi Flick. But at this point in time, the Blaugranes do not want the German tactician to be distracted by such matters, and to keep him focused on the upcoming crucial phase of the season.
Furthermore, waiting till the end of the season will also provide Barcelona with a better idea of the team’s situation in general and of the midfielder’s situation in particular.
About the financial aspect of the new contract, there is not much information available. However, it is clear that Frenkie would not be earning as much with a potential new contract as he has been up to now at Barcelona.
The decision on the Dutchman’s renewal can also have significant implications for some other players in the Blaugrana squad. For instance, it will determine what role Gavi plays in the team, while Marc Casado and Marc Bernal’s minutes will also be affected by this decision.
However, it is also clear that finding a midfielder of Frenkie’s stature and ability from the market will not be easy. Thus, Flick will have a big decision to make by the end of this season.
