Barcelona’s performance against Benfica last night was one that showcased the sheer attacking talent in the team as Lamine Yamal and Raphinha helped them to a 3-1 win.
Neither, player, however, took home the man-of-the-match award as it was young Pedri Gonzalez who took home the accolade for the second time against Benfica in two weeks.
While the Canary Islander did not have a goal or an assist to show, he was the team’s single most important player in keeping the game under control and it is only deserved that his work-rate is now being appreciated.
As relayed in a recent report by Mundo Deportivo, Pedri’s renewed physical fitness has not only helped him play regularly but to do so at a very high level this season. In fact, the 22-year-old is on track to enjoying the best season of his career.
The midfield phenom, after all, tops the charts in statistics that seemed impossible for him to dominate even a year ago.

Against Benfica, Pedri was the Barcelona player who covered the most ground at 13.6 km and did himself one better compared to his record in the first leg where he covered 13.2 km.
Further, he is the Barcelona player who has accumulated the most minutes in the Champions League this season with an average of 114.7 km per game.
In addition, Pedri completed the most passes, and the most chances and recovered the highest number of balls for the Blaugrana against Benfica.
With six assists so far this season, Pedri has already exceeded his tally of last season and his debut season. Further, he is just two goals away from his highest goal tally in a season which stands at seven.
A big part of Barcelona’s success this season depends on Pedri’s form and fitness and he is up there as one of the best midfielders in the modern game. Managing his minutes, however, is going to be crucial for Hansi Flick and Co.
