Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez is on track for an automatic contract renewal, as revealed by journalist Jordi Gil via SPORT.

It must be noted that Martinez’s renewal depends on him playing at least 60% of Barcelona’s matches this season, with each appearance lasting at least 45 minutes. Given his current form and match participation, this milestone seems well within his reach.

So far, Martinez has featured in seven official matches for Barcelona during this campaign – six in La Liga and one in the Champions League. If he maintains this level of involvement, he is set to activate the renewal clause in his contract.

Martinez might not take long to active the clause

With Barcelona typically playing around 55 matches in a season, this would mean Martinez needs to play in about 30 to 35 games to secure the extension. Barring any injuries or setbacks, it is highly likely he will meet this requirement.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is Martinez’s comeback from a serious Achilles tendon injury last season. The injury kept him from having a proper pre-season and delayed his competitive start.

However, this season has been a different story, with the defender consistently available for selection and showing great form.

Martinez is a leader

It is said that Hansi Flick is really impressed with Martinez’s contributions both on and off the field.

On the pitch, Martinez has been a commanding presence, adding much-needed strength to Barcelona’s backline, which has been criticised in the past for lacking aggression. Off the field, he plays a crucial mentoring role, particularly with the younger players.

His experience and guidance have been vital in the development of emerging talents like Cubarsí and Sergi Dominguez, who are growing under his wing.

In summary, Martinez’s strong performances and leadership this season make it highly probable that he will trigger his automatic contract renewal, further solidifying his role in the team for the future.
