Following his red card in the game against Sevilla, Barcelona starlet Fermin Lopez has been handed a one-match suspension by the RFEF Disciplinary Committee, reports Mundo Deportivo.

The La Masia graduate, as a result, will miss Monday’s La Liga encounter against Rayo Vallecano.

What happened?

Fermin was not part of the starting lineup against Sevilla on Sunday but came on as a substitute in the second half and had an eventful 15-minute period on the pitch.

The attacking midfielder scored a crucial goal a minute after he came on to replace Gavi at half-time, heading the ball into the back of the net.

However, close to the hour-mark, Fermin was involved in the thick of things again as he went in on an ill-advised tackle on Djibril Sow.

It was a studs-up challenge from the Barcelona starlet and he did not get much of the ball before taking out the Sevilla player.

The VAR conversation

Initially, Fermin was shown only a yellow card by referee Hernandez Hernandez but a consultation with the VAR changed the situation.

“I recommend a review for a potential serious rough play,” said the VAR official, Carlos del Cerro.

Upon reviewing the footage, Hernandez Hernandez quickly made up his mind.

“Yes, he goes with both legs in the shape of scissors. It comes in very strong, lack of control of the body. That is dangerous. I’m going to change the yellow to the number 16 for a red one,” Hernandez Hernandez noted.

The referee then went on to document the foul on Sow in the official report as follows: “A challenge against an opponent in a ball dispute, using excessive force.”

Now, Fermin has been handed a one-match suspension, which follows point one of Article 130 of the Disciplinary Code, relating to violent conduct in the game.

The youth academy product will miss the match on Monday, 17th February, against Rayo Vallecano at Montjuic.
