Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United deservedly defeating Spurs, away from home.
United making it six wins in a row.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion though, the politics (almost!) entirely absent, concentrating on matters on the pitch…
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Spurs fans and the odd Newcastle United supporter also contributing:
‘Last week media saying Man U were in crisis. Now it’s Spurs turn. No credit for Newcastle being the better team.’
‘I think Spurs have found a solution to their goalkeeping problems with Austin, he deserves a run in the first team. Newcastle deserved the victory today but will likely find it harder against Arsenal in midweek.’
‘Well done Newcastle. Better team won.
There are massive problems at Spurs. Rough time to support that club.’
‘Spurs fans were the worst, complaining about play stopping for Gordons head injury. They booed when Burn went down in the box and ref stopped play.’
‘Well done Toon.
From Spurs view, thought we played well, some surprising but really good displays from players out of favour, which makes you wonder why Ange hasn’t played them.
Yes we need a few in but theres enough in the players we have.
Austin, Bergvall, Spence and even Reguillon are good enough.
Wrong result but better Spurs.’
‘Referees were awful for both sides… Joelinton should’ve been booked a lot earlier, how there’s no VAR for Dubravka’s head being kicked and no foul for Gordon having his nose broken, I will never know. However, performance-wise? Tottenham deserved better than a loss and Newcastle United? Well done surviving the second half as that was horrible, great first half and congrats on 3 points again.’
‘Isak scored, so expect the inevitable selection in Deeney’s Team of the Week with another rambling line about when are Arsenal going to sign him?
He’s nothing if not predictable.’
‘Except Arsenal are not going to sign him
I’m a Arsenal fan.’
‘He’d be a fantastic signing for Arsenal if a) he was available, b) they could afford him and c) he was willing to take a step down in status.’
‘He will leave but probably to another team with Petrodollars.’
‘Not bad considering we had no central defender, our 3rd choice goalie making his first ever start, countless injuires, depleted squad…a free goal from the referee…do i need to go on.’
‘It must be awful supporting the only team in the Premier league that suffers injuries, a depleted squad and poor refereeing decisions. Never happens to other teams.’
‘A referee in your pocket, a clear pen not given, and plenty of first teamers on the bench who could have started. Just because Ange threw away more points, don’t come crying on here!’
’12mins injury time from the ref that blew early against Liverpool when Newcastle were through on goal. Solanke should’ve had a red for kicking Dubravka in the head and we should’ve had a pen for Kulusevski breaking Gordon’s nose. Madley is useless. Great win for the Toon, despite playing 12.’
‘Newcastle have been extremely fortunate in the last 4/5 games. They will finish mid-table because the managemtn team haven’t a clue.’
‘If I was a Spurs fan the thing that would be worrying me most about watching that is that Newcastle barely got out of second gear.’
‘Referee and the officials (and VAR) had a shocker, clear bias or just incompetence – take your pick. Inconsistent with decisions. Botman get yellow for slight obstruction, what was much worse . . Gordon gets his head taken off, no pen or red card.’
‘Clogger Burn still on at half time? Joelinton forearm smash…ref lost his red card.’
‘Let’s not mention the assault on Gordon.’
‘As a neutral, how can a Tottenham player knee the Necastle keeper in thca and not get a card? Gordon is flattened in the box, no action. Dreadful officiating.’
‘Gordon is always looking to buy fouls so he is not believed. What goes around comes around.’
‘Think the blood may have given it away.’
‘Well played Newcastle United, especially given the referee tried his very best to allow a ridiculous amount of time added onto the added time.
Spurs have to tie Big Ange down to a longer contract. They’re brilliant to watch, always good to see Madison come on and cover every blade of grass, mainly with his body as he falls dramatically to the floor anytime someone is near him.’
‘This Newcastle team knows how to win. With Isak and Gordon on fire they could climb up the table further.
As for Spurs when you are down you don’t get any luck. Second half performance was good but Newcastle defended very well.’
‘Ange came down from Celtic where you can expect to have 90% possession in every game and don’t have to worry about having an organised defense – or even a goalkeeper. Same issue with Rogers and Gerrard. Its a bit different down here.’
‘As a neutral for this match. I was puzzled by the time added on at the end of this match. I’ve heard of Fergie Time before now. But never Postecoglou Time. Where on earth did they get that added on time from?… Well done Newcastle for holding out in the end for the well deserved three points. But someone definitely needs to investigate the time added on here. As it seemed quite excessive to me.’
‘Newcastle made hard work of that. Spurs were there for the taking! Meanwhile, Spurs are in a relegation battle with Man Utd!’
‘The worst referee in the PL, totally biased towards the home team.’
‘Congrats Newcastle fans, a nice win. Always like to see them doing well and fingers crossed you guys get a top 4 finish this season’
‘As a Chelsea fan always pleased to see Spurs build on nothing each season.
Equally pleased or the Geordies who are possibly the most passionate supporters in the land.’
‘What on earth was Postecogleu on about in his post match interview? He almost sounded deranged. “If all thinks were equal” on repeat to every question. Really sad to hear a premier league manager rambling on like that.’
