Inter legend Beppe Bergomi reiterates that he’s never believed in the ‘narrative’ surrounding the Nerazzurri and insists Simone Inzaghi needs a full team available to compete on three fronts.

Inter were dreaming of a treble only a week ago, but they have now lost three consecutive games across all competitions, facing elimination in the Coppa Italia semifinals against city rivals Milan and seeing Napoli take a three-point lead at the top of the table with just four games remaining.

The Nerazzurri visit Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday.

Bergomi never believed in Inter ‘narrative’

“Don’t forget how the season started. Many players are away on international duty, and only a few have actually taken a vacation,” Bergomi told Sky Sport Italia (via fcinter1908) on Sunday after Inter’s 1-0 loss against Roma at San Siro.

“Lautaro took a long time to get in shape. I’m not talking about the narrative about the two teams [Inter and Napoli] and I still consider Inter favourite, but I never believed that. I don’t like saying ‘I told you’, I just go by what I see.”

Summer signing Mehdi Taremi has failed to impress in his first season at San Siro, scoring just three goals across all competitions, while Marcus Thuram was not available in the last three matches due to a muscle injury.

“Many times, free signings worked well; we thought Taremi would be a good addition, but he didn’t turn out to be. Zielinski didn’t contribute much,” Bergomi continued.

“Thuram wasn’t available in these key games, and on the wings, Dumfries got injured after nine consecutive matches.

“I still believe that if Inter are to compete on three fronts, they need everyone available. Without squad rotation, they won’t be able to be competitive in everything come May,” concluded Bergomi.

“Inter are not the best team, but they have the best playing style, mainly when they are focused on the Champions League. They’ve also met three strong opponents and they had no margin for errors, so the line-up was decided thinking about the next game. Inzaghi has never had a full team available. Inter have the oldest team in the league and have had many injuries.”
