Ben Davies spent last season on loan at Birmingham City

Birmingham City’s pursuit of a permanent deal for Ben Davies from Rangers has hit a stumbling block due to the Scottish giants’ search for a new manager.

According to Give Me Sport, the Blues are keen on bringing the defender back to the club this summer after spending the season on loan.

The centre-back proved an important part of Chris Davies’ side as they earned promotion straight back to the Championship at the first attempt.

The 29-year-old featured 35 times in the league last season, including 32 starts, which has led to interest from the Midlands outfit in completing a permanent deal for the player.

It is understood that the next Rangers manager will be consulted on the future of Davies, which has led to a stumbling block in Birmingham’s attempts to secure a deal.

No official decision has yet been made on who will take the reins at Ibrox for next season, although speculation is rife.

It was reported by the BBC last week that Davide Ancelotti has been approached by Rangers, but claims that he’s a leading candidate are believed to be wide of the mark.

This will impact Birmingham’s transfer business, as they will want to wrap up a permanent deal for Davies as soon as possible.

It’s been claimed that the defender is open to a return to St. Andrew’s, with the club now preparing for life in the Championship.

But no decision is set to be made on the defender’s future until a permanent manager appointment is made by Rangers.

Ben Davies’ importance to Birmingham

Davies struggled for game time at Rangers prior to his loan move to Birmingham last summer, featuring just eight times in the league across the previous two seasons.

But he proved an important part of the Blues’ first team squad in League One, only missing 11 fixtures in the division.

He bagged his first goal for the club in a 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town in March, and only lost twice in the league while in the side.

Rangers wait shouldn’t take too much longer

Rangers will want to have a new manager in by the end of the month so that they will have plenty of time to work on bringing in new players in the transfer market.

There is no rush to get any of these deals done as it is still only the middle of May, and players are likely on holidays now before the June international break.

This is a stumbling block in getting the deal done, but it only becomes a major issue if the new Rangers boss wants to keep Davies.
