It was announced today that Bochum’s win against Union Berlin back in December has been upheld after the Berliners lodged a motion for the result to be overturned.

The game, back in December, was suspended in the second half after Bochum goalkeeper Patrick Drewes was hit on the head by a lighter. After a lengthy delay, the players returned to the pitch and passed the ball around to see out a 1-1 draw.

In February, Union had lost their original appeal for the result to be reviewed, and then sent a request for review to the Arbitration Court.

One of the reasons behind the decision not to overturn the result, the court said:

“The match was not abandoned, but continued, but the teams involved mutually agreed not to score any more goals. Therefore, the arbitration court considered this case a de facto abandonment of the match and considered it equivalent to a formal abandonment of the match by a referee.”

Holstein Kiel and St.Pauli both lodged motions for the decision to be reviewed, but it was deemed they had no grounds for such a thing.

The teams played again this weekend, which again ended 1-1.

Bochum will benefit from the decision to award them the win as they now find themselves last in the Bundesliga and nine points off of safety, but with an inferior goal difference. However, they are only four points off the relegation playoff spot.

Union, on the other hand, is safe as they sit 11 points off the playoff spot.
