Edu Burgos of Spanish paper AS has just dropped a transfer bomb so massive and so surprising that we don’t really know what to make of it.

The usually reliable transfer insider has declared that “various clubs have contacted Chelsea” over Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, currently starring on loan with our sister club Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

Bayern Munich are apparently looking at him for this summer, “they like him, a lot.” AC Milan are also said to be following him.

We don’t often call this sort of thing shocking – but this one genuinely is, if it’s true. After bringing Santos in and developing, selling him (at the same moment that many fans are desperately calling him to be recalled to the first team, no less) would be a truly stunning development.

Santos sale would be such a major backwards step that it’s just not believable

But here’s the good news – we don’t fully believe this story. There’s just no way that Chelsea are thinking of selling Santos. Even if it’s true that other teams have contacted them, we can’t see anyone offering enough to persuade those in charge to let him go.

Of course the club will consider good offers – don’t forget their aim is to use Chelsea to make money, and if someone comes in with a big offer for any player it will be considered. But right now even our owners and sporting directors aren’t so short sighted that they’ll let a potentially world class player (in a position where the first team needs world class players) go just to make a quick buck.

We’re pretty confident the briefs will soon follow from the insiders best connected at Chelsea to make it clear that the midfielder isn’t for sale. Watch this space.
