Tributes have been flooding in for the late Bruno Pizzul, who sadly died at the age of 86 on Wednesday.

The legendary commentator was the voice of a generation as RAI’s lead commentator for Italy national team matches between 1986 and 2002, a period which included five World Cups and four European Championships.

Pizzul is also recognised for his commentary during the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, which caused 39 deaths prior to the 1985 European Cup final.

In a career that spanned over four decades, Pizzul is widely considered as one of Italian sports greatest ever broadcasters.

Tributes roll in for legendary Pizzul

Roberto Baggio shared a clip of his first ever World Cup goal, featuring commentary from the late Pizzul. He also wrote: “Ciao Bruno, we’ll all miss you. Your voice will echo for eternity.”

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina provided a comment on behalf of the federation and national teams: “The world of football and the Italian national team mourn the death of Bruno Pizzul. He was a thoroughbred champion over the years. He was more than a journalist thanks to his extraordinary professionalism and his humanity, becoming a reference point for millions of fans. He identified his voice with a deep love for the Azzurri.”

The Lega Serie A also posted the following tribute to their social media profiles: “The world of football has lost one of its most iconic voices, who, through his great professionalism, the rhythm of his commentary and his gentle ways, will always remain in the hearts of every sport lover.”

The vast majority of Serie A clubs have also posted tributes, including Juventus, who wrote: The voice of our magical nights has passed away. Rest in peace, Bruno.”

Milan shared footage of their  legendary match against Barcelona, voted as the team’s ‘game of the century’, which also featured commentary from Pizzul.
