The Blues are currently on a quest to make an immediate return to the Championship, following their shock relegation last season. As expected, they are the current League One leaders, and with a week remaining in the January transfer window, there is still room for them to improve their squad.

One name that they have been linked with for a number of weeks is former academy graduate, Nathan Redmond, who plying his trade for Burnley.

According to Alan Nixon in December, The Blues were interested in a reunion and that a wages-only loan deal could work for all parties involved.

A recent development from journalist Darren Witcoop, though, revealed that Redmond was on the radar of a number of clubs, meaning Birmingham would face competition for his signature.

As mentioned, there is still a week remaining in the January transfer window, so there is plenty of time for Birmingham to get a deal over the line.

Former England international and current pundit, Carlton Palmer, spoke exclusively to FLW to discuss whether a move for Redmond would be good business for Birmingham.

Palmer said: "I think Birmingham will now be planning for life back in the Championship and looking at the players they've got in the squad, and looking at the areas where they need to strengthen."

"One player is Nathan Redmond, who is nearing full fitness. He formerly played for Birmingham City before, and Birmingham are believed to be keen on bringing him back to St Andrews."

"They face competition for his signature, because he has a wealth of experience at Championship level. It just hasn't worked out for him at Burnley, and Scott Parker has an array of wide players there."

"The shout was that they would maybe take him on loan in January, but he is not fully fit yet. I'm sure Birmingham, with one foot in the Championship, not looking too far ahead, you've got to plan, and I think they've done that with the players they have signed already."

"I'm sure Birmingham don't want to just make up the numbers in the Championship. If possible, they want to roll on again and do what Ipswich did."

"So, with that in mind, they are looking at players who can play in the Championship that they can bring in the January transfer window, because if they wait until the end of the season, everyone will know that they're looking at those players and up the ante."

"Sentiment cannot get involved here. Nathan is a good player, but he has been out injured for a while, but that would be a good signing, if he's fully fit, with the Championship in mind."

Birmingham City will accept nothing less than automatic promotion this season

The Blues have spent millions of pounds on ensuring that they earn promotion from League One this season at the very minimum, so it would be a huge disaster if they do not finish inside the top two.

Of course, that is rather unlikely given their playing squad compared to the rest of the division, but nothing in football is guaranteed.

With that in mind, Chris Davies has to be wary about how he goes about his business this month, and must only sign players that will benefit the club.

Nathan Redmond is a proven Championship player, so if he can stay fit, it would be a sensational signing, but his recent injury record must be a concern, and the club will hope that it doesn't cause problems at St Andrews.
