Liverpool 1 – 2 Newcastle – EFL Cup Final Man of the Match

Federico Chiesa

This sunny afternoon in London was a tough game predict as Liverpool were always going to arrive as a tired and overplayed entity which had recently been knocked out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage. Newcastle looked vibrant and enthusiastic from the opening bell and it seemed that in that initial period of play, they might blow their illustrious opponents away with pure power and determination.

Arne Slot has continually proved to be a superb tactician who can adjust and reinvent his tactical output at halftime, with countless moments of pitch-side inspiration fuelling a far improved second-half display from his men. With footballing leaders and experience flooding through the core playing group that Slot had on display, it was still evident that without Trent Alexander Arnold at his disposal (due to injury), the reigning EFL champions seemed unsure of how to break down a team built to counter and sit deep when out of possession.

The fact that Newcastle scored their thoroughly deserved first goal late in the first half only increased the Geordies’ tactical endeavour, which meant that Liverpool‘s Dutch head coach would have to react and create a more dynamic second half of play for his Anfield Giants.

Unfortunately for the travelling support from Merseyside, the resurgent Reds did not turn up for the second half either. It would not be until the latter stages of the game would one man starts to show the fight and desire that a final victory requires. Federico Chiesa has sat on the outside looking in for so long, though when he finally arrived on the famous Wembley turf, he was able to deliver some hope and a huge slice of urgency, especially when compared to his teammates.

The Red’s consolation goal was scored by the famous Italian and he showed the want to win with his all-action cameo. This man of the match is in recognition of a Liverpool player who wanted an opportunity to shine and hopefully will receive more chances in the remaining weeks of the season. A fine goal and a surge of energy was too little too late, however, it is important to award someone who showed the will to win.

Tired legs should mean opportunities for others, therefore, I would hope that an Italy international with a point to prove will now start to get the Anfield minutes he has earned.

Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction
