As we approach the end of the season, decisions are awaited on Alexis Saelemaekers and Tammy Abraham from Roma and AC Milan respectively.

According to Calciomercato.com, the two clubs spoke in January about making the loan agreements into permanent ones, but there was no consensus on the valuations of the striker and the winger. Thus, discussions were postponed until the summer.

The Giallorossi and Rossoneri seem to have agreed that any operations will be complete separate because of the costs and salaries involved. The choices that Claudio Ranieri on one side and Sergio Conceiçao on the other could also play a part.

Diminishing roles

It cannot be ignored that both Saelemaekers and Abraham have enjoyed less playing time in recent outings, after having experienced very different moments within the same season. The former Anderlecht man has 20 appearances in the league.

He has had 10 goal contributions from a wing-back role, but in the last two Serie A matches – against Inter and Fiorentina – he started on the bench and didn’t even come onto the field for one minute. It goes against the recent trend under Ranieri, given he seemed an immovable starter.

Abraham meanwhile arrived as a back-up to Alvaro Morata in the first half of the season, and then remained in the same role when Santiago Gimenez arrived. The Englishman has put together 44 appearances in all competitions, with 10 goals and seven assists.

With the unexpected resurgence of Luka Jovic, Abraham has once again slipped back in Conceiçao’s hierarchy and – aided by the need not to question the investment for Gimenez after a few months – the risk is that he will find less space between now and the end of the season.

Under favourable economic conditions, the Rossoneri are not ruling out the idea of keeping him for the next few seasons, but the €5.9m per year gross salary he gets at Roma is a problem that is not easy to resolve.
