Former Italy and Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta believes Inter and Atalanta have ‘regrets’ after opening Champions League games against Manchester City and Arsenal, even if Italian clubs didn’t score against their Premier League rivals.
Champions League Matchday 1 is in the history books, and Juventus were the only Serie A club to win on their debut on Tuesday.
Bologna picked up a 0-0 home draw to Shakhtar Donetsk, the same result as Inter against Manchester City and Atalanta against Arsenal. On the other hand, Milan lost 3-1 against Liverpool in San Siro.
Costacurta, a five-time Champions League winner with Milan and now a pundit for Sky Sport Italia, analysed the performances of Serie A clubs against Premier League rivals on Thursday night.
“We were supposed to be massacred after meeting three English clubs, but on the other hand, we have some regrets,” he said.
“However, never forget that when two teams finish on even points, the goal difference and mostly the goals scored count. We scored no goals even if we faced teams supposed to beat us.”
Costacurta mostly referred to Inter and Atalanta given that Milan lost at home and were booed by their own fans after the final whistle.
Inter and Milan will meet this coming weekend in the first derby della Madonnina of the campaign on Sunday, 22.
The Rossoneri have won just one match across all competitions, and their coach, Paulo Fonseca, will reportedly be sacked if they face another defeat against their city rivals.
