Nick Cushing says Mary Fowler’s injury during our FA Cup semi-final defeat needs to be assessed at greater length before a proper diagnosis can be given.
The Australian was replaced in the first half of City’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United at the Joie Stadium after going down off the ball with a suspected knee injury.
It’s the latest in a series of injury setbacks for the Blues, who were also without fresh absentees Vivianne Miedema and Jill Roord following the international break.
Cushing admitted he was concerned by the nature of the issue for Fowler, but added that a proper review would need to take place before any suspected return date was discussed.
“It doesn’t look great in the sense of adding her back into the training squad or to the injured squad imminently,” our Interim Head Coach said.
“We’ll have to wait, you don’t know about the turnaround quickly. To lose Mary in an important game at an early stage was really difficult.
“I think it is the knee, but I don’t want to speculate or confirm.
“We’re not fearing the worst here, but ultimately, if you come off with knee pain, to turn it around in seven days [is tough] but I don’t know, I'll leave it with the medical team.”
Cushing, however, expects Roord to potentially be available for selection in the coming weeks after missing our clash with United
The midfielder picked up an injury while representing the Netherlands in the recent international break, but the boss says she’s being assessed on a week by week basis.
He added: “Jill came back from Holland injured, Like every team we didn't want to reveal everything, but she came back injured and wasn’t fit to play.
“I think it’s a week by week one, she’s not ruled out for more than today.
“I’m hopeful and expect her to be fit for next week”
