Daizen Maeda has been Celtic's best player of the season. The kind of consistency and output he has showcased in this campaign is truly remarkable. While Nicolas Kuhn's form has faded away since the turn of the year, the Japanese international has continued to deliver one game after another, whether the team is playing well or not.
Maeda has always been considered an important part of this Celtic team. But in the past, it was a lot more about the endless energy and pressing that he brought to the table.
While that is still part of his game, the sheer numbers are outshining everything else in sight. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Maed has scored 28 goals and provided 9 assists in 42 appearances this season.
His numbers have skyrocketed since Kyogo left the club earlier this year, allowing Maeda to shuffle between playing on the wing and as a centre-forward. Unsurprisingly, that kind of form has seen him being linked with clubs around Europe.
Does Maeda see a long-term future for himself at Celtic? Well, his answer to Sky Sports Football will leave the fans worried. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, a reported asked him:
"You seem so settled, so for you when you see other players leave, for you, is it Celtic for the long term?"
Maeda appeared to hold his cards close to his chest though instead of giving a definitive answer. He replied:
"Well, I am not sure. That’s a difficult question. While I am here. I always want to fight and play for Celtic. I want to keep focusing and playing for the team."
Well, most Celtic fans would have liked to hear Maeda commit his future to Celtic. But he was not ready to do that.
And to be honest, why would a professional footballer not keep his options open? Especially when he showing this kind of form.
It is very possible that clubs from all around Europe will come calling for Maeda in the summer transfer window. He was always coveted for his workrate and now, he has proven his ability to score.
