An interesting Champions League quarter-final matchup awaits Aston Villa. Unai Emery will lead his side against PSG into what is expected to be a difficult pair of games. The Ligue 1 side is proving to be tough to get a result against as they progressed to this stage by defeating Liverpool.
Having already beaten a Premier League side, they will look to do so again. Many neutrals are picking the French team to then make it to the semi-finals. Villa, however, has the quality, particularly in the attack, to match up and fare well for themselves.
Speaking on the Claret & Blue podcast, Darren Fletcher gave his opinions on the upcoming CL fixture. Noticing something of a shift that has happened within the French club, he noted how impressed he has been with their development this season.
Speaking with Mat Kendrick, the longtime Premier League player offered his thoughts on PSG:
"Luis Enrique now has that team playing in his style, but they got rid of the Galacticos. They've gone younger; they've got players who need to win who haven't won before."
This is part of what makes this Ligue 1 side so dangerous. Their work rate and constant push make it uncomfortable for their opponents and often difficult to prepare for. With such a team, there isn't a lead that is comfortable, as PSG tends to find a way to claw their way back into matches.
For Emery, this is a good benchmark to see where his men are. Beating this Enrique side would be a positive for the obvious reasons. It would also show him that this team can beat a talented squad that often outworks their opponents. Getting a result against a team with this somewhat rare combination would be the ultimate indication for him that Aston Villa are performing at the level that he expects.
Naturally, winning all games throughout all competitions is the goal. Certain moments against certain styles of teams do, however, weigh more than others. Villa continue to make strides under the Spanish manager. Forget about trophy implications, or otherwise for a moment. If Emery drank some truth serum, he'd likely say that beating this PSG side is the most important test that he'd want to see his men pass.
