Arsenal Women’s head coach Renee Slegers spoke of her enormous pride after reaching the Champions League final.
Arsenal travelled to Lyon with the French giants leading 2-1 in the tie following the first leg at the Emirates.
Arsenal had already produced a memorable comeback against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals but needed to overturn another deficit if they were to reach the final, and they certainly delivered.
The Gunners recorded a statement 4-1 victory to book the club’s place in the Champions League final for the first time in 18 years, thanks to goals from Mariona Caldentey, Alessia Russo and Caitlin Foord, as well as a Lyon own goal.
“I am super proud,” Slegers said. “We talk about the Arsenal way and what that looks like. It is important for us, because that is the football that we believe in.
“It is always hard to deliver your product every single day and every single game.
“But the total picture of what we did today against top opposition in a high pressure moment, I think it is unbelievable from the players.”
Arsenal’s boss continued: “The biggest key for us was how calm we were through all phases of the game. There has been so much work put into this game from the whole team.
“I am so happy, I am delighted for everyone that is a part of this. So happy and we are really looking forward to the final.”
The final will take place in Lisbon on 24 May where they will face a Barcelona side that just demolished Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate.
However, Arsenal still have three WSL fixtures to play prior to the final and are not getting ahead of themselves yet. Slegers insisted: “It is euphoria on the pitch because it is such a special moment, but then 30 minutes after it is like ‘Aston Villa is the next one’ and we want to perform in that one.
“We are so happy and we need to celebrate these special moments and we do, but we are also very humble and we need to get ready for the next one.”
