Edu Gaspar was reportedly left “frustrated” by Arsenal’s decision-making in the summer transfer window and may have contributed to decision to leave the club.

The Brazilian resigned as sporting director on Monday, 4 November to take up a new role under Evangelos Marinakis’ umbrella of football clubs, which includes Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest, Greek outfit Olympiacos and Portuguese side Rio Ave.

Edu initially joined the Gunners as a technical director in 2019, but was promoted in 2022 and has overseen expenditure of roughly £807 million on 36 signings.

The 46-year-old has played a key role in the steady progress Arsenal have enjoyed in recent years, with the club challenging for the Premier League title in each of the last two seasons.

It was only a few months ago when manager Mikel Arteta stated that Edu was a “super important figure” at the club and hoped he would remain there “for a long time”.

But circumstances have evidently change and, although Edu has undoubtedly been enticed elsewhere by a massive pay rise, it seems there is more to his decision to leave north London.

The former Arsenal midfielder was “frustrated by the decision not to spend big in last summer’s transfer window”, according to the Guardian.

Arsenal chose to sign Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea in a late deal rather than invest in more expensive options in attack.

It is also said that Edu held ambitions of one day becoming chief executive officer, but they were “no closer to being fulfilled”.
