Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has moved to make crystal clear his frustrations with the officiating during the penalty shootout of his side’s meeting with Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Atlético, of course, are fresh off another heartbreaking outing on the continent last night.

After welcoming arch rivals Real to the Metropolitano for the 2nd leg of a Champions League Last-16 tie, the Rojiblancos managed to take things all the way to a penalty shootout.

From here, however, controversy reigned.

After Julián Alvarez slotted the ball into the roof of Thibaut Courtois’ net from 12 yards, a subsequent VAR check saw the goal ruled out.

This came owing to what was identified as a double touch on the part of the Argentine, opening the door for visitors Real Madrid to triumph.

Debate has since spread like wildfire regarding the call, with some adamant that Alvarez did indeed touch the ball with both feet, and others arguing the very opposite.

One individual, though, who appears to be in no two minds that the wrong decision was made, is the aforementioned Diego Simeone.

Speaking to the media in the aftermath of Wednesday’s matchup, Atléti’s headmaster did not hold back, in ranting:

“To anyone here: raise your hand if you saw that Julián touched the ball twice in the penalty. Come on! And? Ready? Nobody raises theirs. Another question. I’ve never seen VAR call to review a penalty in a shootout.”
