Celtic midfielder Arne Engels is hoping that he proved his capabilities in Belgium colours with his performance against Italy on Thursday night.

The Scottish giants paid a huge £11m to Bundesliga club Augsburg for Engels in a bid to replace Matt O’Riley, who left the club in the summer.

The 21-year-old midfielder has become an important player in Brendan Rodgers’ side, having already contributed to nine goals directly in 14 matches.

On Thursday night, the Bhoys star man started his first match for Belgium and played 71 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Italy.

He insisted that everyone in Belgium may not know him but he hopes that he has put himself on the map after his performance against Italy.

“People may know me from my Champions League games with Celtic, but I’ve never played at the highest level in Belgium”, the Celtic midfielder said via Voetbalkrant.

“So a lot of people do not really know who I am.

“I hope that with this game I have shown what I am capable of.”

The Bhoys midfielder will be hoping to keep his starting place in Domenico Tedesco’s side when Belgium face Israel this Sunday.
