Bristol Rovers supporters have shared their bemusement at Inigo Calderon Shrewsbury comments
In what was certainly not a game for the football purists, Bristol Rovers ground out a potentially crucial draw away from home at fellow League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night, with both sides continuing to look anxiously over their shoulders.
The draw against the Shrews means the Gas managed to avoid dropping into the relegation zone, with the beleaguered BS7 outfit ending a run of three straight defeats. Burton Albion’s loss at Wycombe would ensure the Gas remain clear of the drop zone with a three-point gap as they now return to the Memorial Stadium for two in a row.
In his post-match remarks, head coach Iñigo Calderón presented an upbeat assessment of the game he’d watched from the sidelines, describing the match as a “good game of football” and sharing his happiness with his players' performance.
Speaking to club media, he said: "It was a good game of football. I am quite happy with the boys. Obviously, you want to win, and I think we did enough things to win, but I cannot ask too much for the players."
Continuing: "Today, I would say the fans are proud of the boys. In the end, that’s what we have to do. We are here for the fans, and at least the ones who came can go home thinking the boys tried everything. We have to improve a lot of things, but I am quite happy. Usually, I am not too happy with the draws. I always want to win, and sometimes I take the risk to lose it, but overall, I think it was a good game."
Calderón would immediately come under fire for his comments, after fans were left confused by his statement.
Reacting to Bristol Rovers' social media post of Calderón’s comments, supporters shared their views on the gaffer’s remarks.
Calderón is definitely right that Gasheads can be proud of their team for one thing at least - a clean sheet is the biggest positive to come from the encounter. And for Jed Ward in particular, who perhaps had his best game since returning from his loan spell at Forest Green Rovers - responding to recent criticism in the best way possible. And football is in many ways a subjective game, but as Gasheads were quick to point out, Calderón’s remarks were a little baffling to say the least. In fact, the encounter was widely seen as a match in which two poor sides showed why they are where they are at the foot of the table.
The Gas looked toothless again in the final third and struggled to maintain any control in midfield, but in the end it was a resilient Bristol Rovers that saw out the stalemate despite the Shrews looking the more likely to snatch a win with a late onslaught.
Ultimately, though, viewers from both sides thought it was a poor game of football, resulting in understandable confusion with Calderón’s own personal assessment.
