This Sunday 2 February at 18:15 CET, the long Austrian winter break will finally be over! After a January of mixing with some of the biggest teams in European football - Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid – we are back on our domestic stage with our big aim being to win honours!
We are going to be put to the test straight away, as there is no time for mistakes in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup if we are serious about lifting the trophy in Klagenfurt at the end of the season. We have to get there first, of course, and an away match at LASK for a spot in the last four is definitely not the easiest assignment. We have an evenly matched record in the ADMIRAL Bundesliga season - in both our clashes against LASK Linz, the away team has won by a single goal. Since then there has been plenty going on at both clubs, with us getting the chance to see new signings Karim Onisiwo and Maximiliano Caufriez in action – under the guidance of Thomas Letsch, who has been in charge for us since December. What changes have gone on at LASK? Defensive anchor Maksym Talovierov was sold to the English Championship, while loans for Tomas Tavares and Tomas Galvez have also ended. New faces in coach Markus Schopp's team are Samuel Adeniran (a centre-forward from Philadelphia Union), Ismaila Coulibaly (midfielder from Sheffield United) and Mohamed Sanogo (midfielder from First Vienna FC). For the Linz club, who had a training camp in Turkey, it is the first competitive match of the new year.
It will be exciting to see which side can make a stronger restart after the winter break given the very different preparation periods. Fans coming to support us can find everything they need to know in our latest away info.
We will cover the match with our live text updates, as usual. The match will be broadcast on ORF 1 live.
We can put the Champions League defeats behind us, as we know just who we were playing against. It will be important though to learn our lessons from them when we play LASK and perform well enough to make the semi-finals. That is our aim.
Thomas Letsch
After the two league matches ended with away wins, we wouldn't mind if that trend continues. It is LASK's first match of the new year, so it won't be easy to judge where they are right now. We will therefore concentrate even more on our own performance and give our all to make the semi-final.
