Yann Sommer has received some criticism for a costly error in yesterday’s Serie A derby draw between AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the 36-year-old was at fault for Milan’s opening goal in the Serie A clash.

Inter Milan conceded a real sucker punch of an opening goal in yesterday’s derby.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri had looked to be on course for a goalless first half.

However, Milan scored on the counterattack right in the 45th minute.

Milan’s goal came about after winning the ball in midfield and looking to quickly get it forward. That is certainly a tactic that has worked well for them in derbies this season.

It was Rafael Leao who drove into the box from the left flank.

The Portuguese international played the ball across goal. His ball seemed to be neither a shot nor a cutback, but simply intended to cause danger in front of the Inter goal.

Unfortunately, Nerazzurri keeper Yann Sommer took the bait and flailed at it.

The Swiss’s punch was weak, not decisively clearing the ball.

Therefore, the ball ended up right at the feet of Milan midfielder Tijani Reijnders, who stuck it in the back of the net.

In the view of the Corriere, this was a clear error by the Inter keeper.
