Walter Zenga offered his verdict on the ongoing dispute between Inter Milan and unsettled star Davide Frattesi.
Speaking on Calciomercato L’Originale, Sky Sport’s program via FCInter1908, Zenga explained what he’d do if in Inter’s shoes.
25-year-old Frattesi has grown tired of his fringe role at Giuseppe Meazza.
Frustration boiled over last month as the former Sassuolo midfielder officially requested to be sold in January.
However, Inter will not fulfill Frattesi’s wish unless someone tables an offer in the region of €50 million.
Roma and Tottenham Hotspur are among Frattesi’s most notable admirers.
But neither side would touch Inter’s excessive asking price, at least not this month.
They could knock on Nerazzurri’s door next summer.
Yet, Simone Inzaghi will have to deal with an unhappy player until the rest of the season.
Frattesi’s turmoil could affect the entire dressing room.
Not long ago, he was firmly part of the club’s long-term project. However, the situation has recently taken a massive U-turn.
As a result, the Italy international can’t wait to leave.
“Let’s remember that there are five substitutions and many matches to play,” Zenga said.
“However, as a club, if a player were to come to me and say they’re not happy and want to leave…
“Maybe someone who’s unhappy doesn’t even train at a high level and ends up lowering the overall standard.”
Roma’s initial idea was to sign Frattesi in a swap deal. They had planned to use Lorenzo Pellegrini as a counterpart.
But Inter have rebuffed their proposal.
Indeed, Beppe Marotta needs to raise funds for the summer transfer window.
The reigning Serie A champions are keen to rejuvenate their aging squad, but it’d take a substantial financial sacrifice.
Frattesi will likely fall victim to Inter’s need for cash.
