Ex-Real Madrid star Varane still involved at Como: Role revealed | OneFootball

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is still involved with Como, despite joining the team and then retiring within the space of two months over the summer.

Varane left Manchester United upon the expiry of his contract over the summer and ended up signing for Cesc Fabregas’s side on a free transfer. However, he picked up a knee injury in his first and only appearance for the club, was then removed from their Serie A squad list, before announcing his retirement in September.

Despite not being involved in training, Varane is still very much involved behind the scenes at the Stadio Sinigaglia, club President Mirwan Suwarso has recently revealed.

Speaking in an interview with Calcio e Finanza published on Sunday, the Como chief explained that Varane had already started investing in the team before he joined as a player over the summer.

‘I actually think he’s smarter than me’, Suwarso joked.

Varane is currently helping to build the club’s infrastructure in relation to its academy, educational programme and summer schools.

Aside from Vararne, there is also Arsenal, Barcelona, France and CBS Sports legend Thierry Henry among the club’s list of investors.

“Thierry is extremely useful in building the brand, even if he’s in the U.S. or London, he certainly helps raise our profile,” Suwarso told Calcio e Finanza.

“Varane is here every month, he works with our educational team, with the education board, with the Academy, and is also involved in our digital sector. He’s very smart. I actually think he’s smarter than me.

“He was already an investor before joining us. He has investments in sports technology, so now that we’re working together, we’re aligning our interests and resources. He’s very involved in the Academy, in building the school, and in the summer camp, bringing both his experience and vision.”
