Chelsea’s pursuit of a defender continues. Every window a new option seems to be brought in and then discarded, and we’re still no closer to finding the “new Van Dijk” that everyone knows we’re looking for.
A rising star in the Premier League continues to look our best hope on that front – Dean Huijsen has had a phenomenal campaign with Bournemouth, and has the same tall frame and calmness on the ball.
Of course he’s not yet developed the leadership and cool command of Van Dijk, but he’s only 19. That will come naturally with time, if he’s given the right leadership.
The Cherries know they’re onto something good, and even if they accept they will eventually have to sell him, they’re going to make sure they get every penny he’s worth.

An exclusive from CaughtOffside today reveals that the defender has a £50m release clause – already looking like something of a bargain. Let’s not forget we paid £45m for Axel Disasi just a year and a half ago. Huijsen is younger, better, and has more potential. He could be a £100m defender before long.
So it should be no surprise that CaughtOffside add the claim that Bournemouth are going to do everything in their power to get Huijsen to sign a new contract, adding a massive salary boost in return for raising that release clause.
It will come down to the Dutch defender’s choice really – does he want to stay another year or two developing his game, or does he want to jump ship with his stock riding high? If he does decide to go, you can be sure Chelsea will be in the mix trying to make sure they’re the ones who land him.
