Diangana is set to leave the Baggies after six years playing for the club

Former West Brom player and current Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes that Baggies winger Grady Diangana has failed to live up to the high expectations set of him at The Hawthorns over the last few seasons, and he is not surprised that the Congolese international is set to leave the club this summer.

Diangana is nearing the end of his sixth season at the club, and fifth as a permanent Baggies player, since his initial arrival on loan from West Ham United in the summer of 2019.

He has been a thorn in the side of many Championship teams over the years in blue and white, and played a key part in their promotion to the Premier League in his debut campaign, but his form has been relatively inconsistent over the last few years amid West Brom's struggles to return to the top-flight.

The 27-year-old is now set to call time on his spell at the club, after now-sacked boss Tony Mowbray revealed on Monday that he will not be playing for the Baggies next season, with his contract set to expire in June.

The 26-year-old enjoyed his best season at The Hawthorns to date last term, with seven goals and eight assists in 36 Championship appearances as Carlos Corberan's side finished fifth, but were beaten in the play-offs by Southampton.

He has struggled to return to those heights throughout the 2024/25 campaign, however, and has made just 14 starts in the league so far this term, with four goals and three assists in 33 appearances in all.

West Brom have also struggled as a side in general over the last few months, and are now out of this season's play-off race, with Tony Mowbray relieved of his duties as boss not long after he broke the news of Diangana's own exit on Monday.

Ex-Baggies player and current Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has been disappointed by the 27-year-old's form over the last few campaigns, especially given his clear talent. As a result, he is not shocked that he is set to leave the club ahead of next term.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman said: “Grady Diangana, like most of the West Bromwich Albion squad, with the exception of two or three players, has massively underachieved.

“Not just this season, but the last couple of seasons really. He is a player of such ability that just hasn’t impacted games in a way that his ability should allow him to.

“Ultimately, it’s disappointing that he was unable to do that.

“I’m a little bit surprised that West Brom have relieved Tony Mowbray with two games to go, but I’m not particularly surprised that Grady Diangana won’t be at the football club next season.”

Diangana has been linked with a surprising Premier League switch - Baggies fans will have mixed feelings over his exit

It is fair to say that Diangana is not the only West Brom wide attacker that has struggled for regular output this season - Mikey Johnston has three goals and five assists in 39 league games and Jed Wallace has one goal and assist each in 28 league outings so far.

The 27-year-old has not been a massive help to their promotion aspirations this season, and although he has popped up with seven goal contributions and some decent performances, it is clear that neither Carlos Corberan nor Tony Mowbray have trusted him to make a consistent impact.

Baggies supporters will undoubtedly hold Diangana in high regard for his exploits at the club over recent years, particularly in their 2019/20 promotion campaign and last term, but they will surely be surprised to learn of apparent Premier League interest in his services ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Both Leeds United and Wolves have reportedly been alerted to his potential availability this summer, and Diangana is claimed to be putting off a move to the MLS in the hope that a move to another English side materialises.

Whether he has done enough to earn a top-flight move is unclear, but while his next destination is currently up in the air, he will hope to finish his Baggies career on a high over the next two weeks.
