La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that new Fiorentina midfielder Nicolò Fagioli spoke to his ex-coach Massimiliano Allegri before joining the Tuscans from Juventus on the deadline day.

Fiorentina completed Fagioli’s transfer from Juventus just ten minutes before the end of the winter transfer window.

The Italy international joined the Tuscans on loan with an obligation to buy tied to personal and team targets.

Fiorentina beat competition from Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille despite the Italian tactician pushing for the midfielder’s move to France.

According to Gazzetta, Fagioli’s entourage and Fiorentina had reached an agreement a few days before the Viola shook hands with Juventus.

Marseille pushed to sign him in the last hours of the winter transfer window, but Fagioli didn’t even pick up the phone as he was unwilling to move abroad.

For this reason, according to Gazzetta, his ex-coach Allegri contacted him on behalf of the French club. The Italian tactician reportedly advised Fagioli to give a clear answer to Marseille, so Fagioli called De Zerbi to confirm he preferred joining Fiorentina.

“I am sorry because I’ve spent 10-11 years here, creating a solid bond with the club, my teammates and the fans, but now I am focused and happy for this new experience,” Fagioli told Gazzetta before leaving Turin on Monday.

“It was an endless day; it was all decided in the last ten minutes. I want to thank Marseille because they’ve trusted me since the start of the transfer window, but I decided to join Fiorentina. I spoke to mister Palladino and the club and I am happy with this decision.

“I thank Juventus fans because they supported me also in difficult times and I wish them the best for the season.”

Fagioli only collected 773 minutes of football at Juventus in the first part of the season, providing one assist in 22 appearances.
