In a significant move for FC Barcelona, Hansi Flick is expected to welcome former midfielder Thiago Alcantara back into his coaching staff starting January 2025, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Thiago, a former La Masia graduate, announced his retirement this past summer after his contract with Liverpool expired.

Immediately afterwards, the former Spanish international joined Flick’s coaching staff at Barça, although it was only on a short-term contract through the summer.

Following a short stint as an external consultant, Thiago returned to England, mainly due to tax purposes.

But, in a short time as a coach, the ex-midfielder made a big impression on the squad, especially the younger midfielders coming through the ranks. As such, Flick & co. have been keen on having Thiago back at the earliest possible.

Now, it is being claimed that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich midfielder will be returning to the club in January.

Upon his return, Thiago will assume a formal role within the Catalans’ coaching staff, allowing Barcelona to make an official announcement without any complications regarding his previous commitments.

Despite being based in England, Thiago remains closely connected to Barcelona’s daily operations. He participates in virtual meetings with the coaching staff and has played a role in key decisions.

One notable instance was when he attempted to help Barça recruit Stefan Bajcetic, a former teammate at Liverpool, following Marc Bernal’s injury.

Thiago reached out to Bajcetic to persuade him to join Barcelona; however, the transfer fell through due to Financial Fair Play regulations, leading the youngster to move to RB Salzburg instead.
