A summer of change is afoot for Leeds United as they gear up for the Premier League
Leeds United are looking at wholesale changes to their squad as they gear up for the challenge of the Premier League.
They sealed the Championship table on the final day, finishing level with Burnley on 100 points but taking top spot on account of their goal difference, but they have known they're promoted for a couple of weeks now.
The Whites have a number of squad issues to resolve as they adjust for the challenge ahead, so it’s given them chance to make those calls and get their ducks in row before the opening of the transfer window.
It now seems clear who is likely to be departing Elland Road this summer.
According to TEAMtalk, the Whites will listen to offers for Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood this summer.
Gelhardt has been on loan with Hull City since January, since when he has made 20 appearances, notching five goals.
Greenwood has been at Preston North End on a season-long loan, making 38 appearances, scoring five goals and assisting three more.
They’re set to be joined by midfielder Josuha Guilavogui – who joined in October 2024 on a deal until the end of the season – and full-back Sam Byram who, according to TEAMtalk, will both likely let go at the end of their contracts.
It has not yet been revealed where any of the four might end up next season, but it would be surprising not to see the loanee duo field interest from their respective temporary sides given their important contributions this term.
That quartet are unlikely to be the only familiar faces departing the Yorkshire club this summer, with the same outlet reporting that Patrick Bamford has likely played his last game for the Whites.
The 31-year-old failed to start a single Championship game this season and, as such, has been deemed surplus to requirements; newly promoted Wrexham are reportedly eyeing a move.
Someone who has been a more regular feature this season is Illan Meslier but, having suffered a difficult time between the sticks, leading to his dropping towards the back-end of the season, he is expected to be another outgoing.
The Whites will have to make sure they can stretch their budget wide enough to account for the replacements they’ll need this summer.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke himself is not even totally safe in the summer shake-up.
It was reported towards the end of last month by talkSPORT that the Whites’ hierarchy were considering dispensing with the German despite already confirming promotion at that point, suggesting doubts over his capability to keep the side in the Premier League.
However, Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe has since reaffirmed his faith in Farke, confirming to BBC Radio Leeds: "I have ended the speculation. He is my man."
Nevertheless, the fact it was ever a conversation itself, given Farke could scarcely have done any better this season, is proof in itself that nobody at Elland Road should feel guaranteed of their place in the team next season.
The Leeds team we see take to the field in the Premier League in August looks set to have a very different look to the one we saw on the final day of the Championship; it’s going to be a busy summer.
