AC Milan take on Lecce at San Siro tonight and in doing so they will come face-to-face with a player that they admire in Patrick Dorgu. In fact, they like him so much that they put in an eight-figure bid for him.
La Gazzetta dello Sport provide some background on Milan’s pursuit of Dorgu, which was well covered by the media at the time. It all started a little less than a year ago, when the Danish full-back entered the Rossoneri’s radar on the recommendation of Geoffrey Moncada, who ‘fell in love’ with him.
Dorgu had just won the Primavera league title with the Salento club and he stood out. The senior team head coach Roberto D’Aversa promoted him because of his physique, athleticism and his eye for goal, all while Milan picked him out as an ideal deputy or even heir to Theo Hernandez.
After the promotion to the first team Milan moved for the Dane, but with a limited budget of around €10m. The figure politely rejected the advance because they believed that he is worth more, and they were proven to be correct.
Premier League teams came forward, just as Juventus and Napoli made their moves in Italy. Nothing was done and we come to Milan-Lecce in April last season, when the new coach Luca Gotti moved him to the right to try and limit Theo, but it didn’t pay off and the Rossoneri won easily.

Dorgu is already a protagonist of the new season. Not only did he mark his debut for the Danish senior national team with a decisive goal in the UEFA Nations League, but he also scored a great goal against Parma.
Milan’s offer is now far short of what Dorgu is currently worth, because his value has at least tripled. Tottenham and Chelsea were the last to come forward at the end of August. They were also rejected. Will Milan try again, especially if Theo goes? Tonight could be an audition of sorts.
