Milan Futuro are 90 minutes away from learning their fate, but regardless of whether they stay in Serie C it has been a worrying campaign.

La Gazzetta dello Sport write that ‘whatever happens, it will be a failure’ for the Futuro in their debut season. A second leg away against SPAL awaits over the weekend, with the Rossoneri having taken the first leg 1-0 thanks to a Sandri penalty.

A lot is at stake for both clubs. Milan launched the Futuro as the new cornerstone of a youth project, so relegation in year one would be a setback that would also be added to all the other negative points at all levels. SPAL were in Serie A five years ago, and began 2024-25 with the play-offs as their goal.

There is no extra time or penalties planned. SPAL finished higher in the league and thus a draw on aggregate (so a one-goal win in the second leg) would even be enough to keep them up. The Rossoneri instead must be to close these 180 minutes having scored one more goal than their opponents.

If, as was clear from the beginning, the home field advantage was practically irrelevant in the first leg – just over a thousand paying fans, most of whom with a white and blue scarf around their necks – the Mazza stadium will instead be a cauldron.

Advance sales are going very quickly in these hours – the West curve is sold out – and the projection suggests that the attendance will be close to 10,000. And if in the first leg the ultras did not show up at Solbiate Arno to protest against the second teams, this time they will be there.

Be careful, though: Ferrara is a passionate place but also very angry and disappointed, and if things were to end badly there are those who fear consequences with regards to public order.
